Check Mat Review: 6 Carp Fishing Mats Reviewed & Comparison

A unhooking mat is usually used to gently land the fish. In the unhooking mat test we present you 6 carp fishing mats in comparison.

Check-off mats are used especially for carp fishing. This is why many people refer to them as carp mats. But of course they can also be used for other fish. They are used to gently release the caught fish from the hook without injuring it. Afterwards the fish is usually released again.

Fishing mats are usually made of especially soft polysterol or foam. Often the material is water-repellent.  This should not endanger the slime layer of the caught fish. To land the fish particularly gently, it is advisable to moisten the mat before the fish is landed. The easiest way to do this is to lay the mat briefly on the surface of the water and then moisten it with water over the entire surface.

But unhooking mats are not only used when fishing for carp. Apart from fishing for game fish, they are also used for fishing for predatory fish. For example, it is also used for pike-perch fishing, pike fishing and catfish fishing. Because predatory fish in particular can also move very strongly and quickly on land. Therefore there are often edges on the mats to prevent a possible risk of injury to the fish. There are sometimes even quite large unhooking mats, as can be seen in the following picture on the left:

When catching a fish, make sure that your hands are wet or moistened before you touch the fish. Otherwise the mucous membrane of the fish can be injured. The injuries then increase the risk of the fish suffering from fungal infection or other diseases. A suitable landing net is also indispensable for landing the fish.

As there are many different models on the market, we have tested different protective mats for you. In the following we will explain what was particularly important to us with the individual unhooking mats.

Note: From time to time it can happen that selected unhooking mats are not available for a short time. If this is the case, you will find numerous mats for fishing on this overview page.

So we have tested and evaluated the unhooking mat

The criteria we have used in this product report are as follows:

  • Quality and workmanship
  • Size
  • Transport
  • Material
  • Price / performance

For the quality criterion we checked for example if the seams of the fishing mat were sufficiently processed. Of course it was also important to us that the mat is as stable as possible and does not fly apart after the first landing. Another important criterion for us was also the size. Because many carp will become very big, which means that they will need a large mat.

As a rule hook-off mats are between 100 cm x 60 cm and 200 x 300 cm in size. These sizes have proven to be very common for carp fishing. With this criterion we simply looked that normal to large fish can be landed on the mat without problems. If this was not the case, we have evaluated the unhooking mat accordingly negative.

Of course a hook-off mat should also be very easy to transport. Especially if the way to the water takes longer, a huge tub that can’t even be folded up would simply be a hindrance. Therefore we have made sure that the catch mat is also suitable for transport.

Of course the material is also decisive. In our opinion this should be as water-repellent as possible. At the same time it should also have the ability to absorb water for a certain period of time. This way the scale dress is not endangered by the fish. Because especially dry mats can injure catfish, pike, eel etc. very quickly. Therefore the material should be as comfortable as possible for the fish. It is also important that the material is highly durable.

Finally, of course, we also looked at the price/performance ratio. Here we checked if the price is in line with the quality of the carp mat. If this was not the case, we evaluated the product accordingly negative.

Now the first unhooking mat test has already started. If you want to buy the ticking off mat, you will find a link to the respective page in the product report.  Have fun with it.

Angel Domain Unhooking Mat Monsta Styro Mat

First in the test we would like to introduce the displayMonsta Styro Mat. This is a relatively cheap fishing mat. It is already available in specialist shops for just under 18 Euros. With the dimensions 82 x 68 cm is admittedly not the largest fishing mat, but for the normal hobby angler completely sufficient.

Thanks to the integrated FastTex fasteners, the fishing mat can also be folded up without any problems. This means that it is only half as big. It also has 2 handles that can be connected for easy transport. It can then be easily taken in your hand and transported, similar to a fishing suitcase. This is also a good feature for stowing it away.

However, the material feels a little thin. This can of course quickly have a negative effect, especially for frequent anglers. However, we had no problems with the material in our test phase.

Short & concise

Here you will find the most important facts about the fishing mat:

  • Brand: Angel Domain
  • Colour: olive
  • Length: 82cm
  • Width: 68cm
  • Material: 100% polyester
  • Price: cheap
  • thick, polystyrene filled edge
  • high buoyancy in water
  • washable

Conclusion of the unhooking mat test

We landed a carp and a pike on this mat. And despite the low price, it did exactly what a ticking off mat should do. We also liked the fact that it has an edge that is additionally filled with polystyrene. This prevents the landed carp from slipping off the mat so quickly.

In addition the fishing mat swims and after a few photos you can easily pull the fish back into the water. If you want to spend very little money on a fishing mat, you can certainly strike here.

Hooking Mat Deluxe 120 x 80cm , Large Carp Hooking Mat

The Display Hooking Mat Deluxe is with a length of 120 cm and a width of 80 cm, a little bit bigger than the Monsta Styro Mat presented before. This mat here, too, can be easily folded for transport. This way it has a transport size of 60 x 80 cm, which is relatively handy in our opinion. The integrated transport loops are very practical for a more pleasant wearing comfort.

The material consists of 100% polyester which makes it almost completely water-repellent. This unhooking mat also has a slightly higher edge so that the hooked fish cannot escape so quickly and remain on the mat. The inside of the fishing mat is filled with styrofoam. On the picture below, the filling looks a bit stronger than it is in reality. But in our opinion it fulfils its purpose completely.

We found the idea with the integrated eyelets on the side very clever. You can easily insert 6 pegs into them to anchor the mat firmly to the ground. Especially on damp or wet meadows, which are a bit steep due to the shore, it can quickly happen that a wriggling fish moves the mat. The wind can also lift it if it is not fastened.

To prevent this you can anchor the mat firmly with ordinary pegs that are normally used for fishing tents. However, the pegs are not supplied. These should be ordered separately if necessary.

All the important facts, briefly and concisely

  • Brand: Deluxe
  • Colour: olive
  • Length: 120 cm
  • Width: 80 cm
  • Material: 100% polyester
  • 6 eyelets for fixing with pegs (not included) to the ground
  • With carrying strap
  • Transport dimensions: 60 x 80 cm
  • Price: favourable

We were able to land several capital carp with this fishing mat. Anyway, it is also nice that the bottom was additionally padded. Thus the fish is protected separately again. For transport it is ok and from the processing and quality, it makes a good impression. Also this model is good if you do not want to spend so much money. But you should be aware that you might have to cut back on thin materials.

Cormoran Pro Carp Stalker Mat unhooking mat

In this product report the AnzeigeCormoran Pro Carp Stalker Mat is definitely the cheapest unhooking mat. It can be purchased for just under 15 Euro. From the dimensions, it is with 100 cm x 60 cm in any case okay. We landed a 5 kg carp on it and had no problems with the size. However, if you want to tackle larger target fish, you should get another product.

In our opinion it is a bit disturbing that the unhooking mat does not have an edge. This means that a wriggling catch can sometimes “slip away” quickly. If you decide to use this model, you simply have to be a bit more careful. For transport, it can be easily rolled up. Just like you know it from a sleeping mat.

The loops on the side of the mat ensure optimal support. This makes this unhooking mat relatively space-saving for fishing gear. It can also be carried under the arm without any problems.  The surface material is water-repellent and easy to clean. In any case we recommend to moisten the Cormoran Pro Carp Stalker Mat before landing the fish.

Conclusion of the unhooking mat test

If you are very price conscious, you won’t do much wrong with this model – at least as far as quality and workmanship are concerned. If you want to prevent the fish (especially predatory fish like a pike are particularly fidgety) from slipping off the mat so easily, you should rather change to another model. But for small fish they are certainly good. If you want to tackle big and capital carp, you might want to switch to another model.

Below is our graphic summary from the unhooking mat test:

Chub Compact Xtra Protection Mat Carp unhooking mat

Note: This article may not be available at the moment. The following display unhooking mats are an alternative.

The DisplayChub Compact Xtra Protection Mat is not the most expensive, but not necessarily the cheapest unhooking mat. It is therefore in the medium price segment. The reason for this lies in the processing. It has been processed to a very high quality. This can be seen, for example, in the seams of the rather complex construction.

We liked the fact that the unhooking mat looks like a suitcase when closed. Even when you open it, it reminds you more of a fishing suitcase than a simple fishing mat. The reason for this is that the walls are properly padded and the separation protects the hooked fish. In this way they ensure that it cannot escape.

There is also the possibility of attaching pegs. This prevents the mat from slipping away so easily. It is of normal size with a length of 110 cm and a width of 75 cm. So it is ideal for the complete range between normal sized and larger fish. But it will be too small for big carp.

All important points you should know for the unhooking mat test:

  • length 110 cm
  • width: 75 cm
  • height: 10 cm
  • padded walls
  • Cover with velcro
  • Possibility to fix pegs
  • Price: medium price

The Chub Compact Xtra Protection Mat is a bit more expensive, but it convinced us completely. Especially people who value high quality will be happy with this carp mat.  Because also the material makes a great impression. However, this also has its price. So if you want to spend about 50 Euro for a unhooking mat, you will certainly not do much wrong with this model. We can therefore recommend it to others.

Chub Snooper Xtra Protection Mat

The Chub Snooper Xtra Protection Mat is similar in construction to the Chub Compact Xtra Protection Mat. No wonder, because it is also considered to be its big brother. The shape of this model is reminiscent of a case. But it is essentially much larger. We also liked the fact that it has an additional cover in the Checkmate test from the outset.

This is used so that the fish can calm down a little in the dark and is not so hectic. This cover also offers the animal some protection. When using it in practice we had the feeling that the fish is less stressed.

The bottom of the unhooking mat is very soft and comfortable. Here you can clearly see the difference to inferior products. We also liked the fact that it is relatively easy to transport. For this you simply have to fold and close the mat. The practical carrying handle is then used for easy transport to the fishing spot.

On the following picture you can see very well the cover for calming the fish:

  • Length 120 cm
  • Width: 90 cm
  • Height: 12 cm
  • Cushioned walls
  • Including cover to reduce stress of the fish

Conclusion of the unhooking mat test

This fishing mat is a qualitative improvement. It is also much bigger which makes it more suitable for big carp. However, you have to dig a little deeper into your pocket. Nearly 80 Euros are not exactly cheap for a hook-off mat.

But if you do the sport very intensively and are looking for something of high quality, you will be very satisfied with this model in any case.

We have not regretted the purchase and can therefore recommend the product without any restrictions. By the way, it is also available at the advertisement fishing place.

Strategy Unhooking Cradle Abhakmatte

Note: This item may not be available at the moment. The following display unhooking mats are an alternative.

The DisplayStrategy Unhooking Cradle is slightly different from the check-off mats already presented. It is with 38 cm relatively high. And this brings us straight to the negative part of this unhooking cradle. The complete mat is very bulky. It can be folded, but only from the long side. The rest of the frame remains. Therefore you should check before buying, if the fishing mat with 112 cm in length, fits into the trunk at all. Because many trunks are not wide and deep enough. However, we have transported it with an SUV and had no problems.

We think it is very good that it stands very stable. Even if a larger pike fidgets inside it, it cannot fall over so easily thanks to its stability. What we also liked very much is the fact that you can fold up the mat including the fish and then gently put it back into the water. We tried this several times and it worked smoothly every time.

Another advantage is that the fabric is nice and thick. Nothing tears so quickly here. Furthermore, the fish lies very well in the mat and calms down more quickly. The workmanship is also top. It is really a hook-off mat for anglers who take fishing seriously and are regularly on the water.

Our conclusion

This unhooking mat is perfect for those who value a great finish and high quality. It also offers optimal protection for the fish. The transport characteristics are not so ideal, but it makes a very good impression in the other points as well. If you have a large car, we can warmly recommend this fishing mat.

Final conclusion to the unhooking mat test

6 mats we finally tried and tested in the unhooking mat test. 2 of them could really convince us and 1 made it to the comparison winner.
