Shimano Sahara FI In Short Review

By

Since this year the Sahara by Shimano has also been on the German market. Up to now it was mainly sold in the English speaking countries. The Shimano Sahara is priced slightly below the Nasci and looks very similar to the latter. I have had a close look at the reel and tell you what I think of it.

First impression

The reel turns well, nothing hitches and everything is as it should be. An exploded drawing is enclosed with the roller, as well as washers for correcting the string laying. But usually you don’t need these, because the reel is already winding cleanly. The spool and the handle are made of aluminium, while the reel body is made of XT-7 graphite. So the first impression is consistently good. On the outside, the reel is very similar to the NASCI, except that the spool is slightly differently polished and a bit more grey than its black sister reel of the latest generation.

The trailing edge is large and allows long and precise casts. The new concept of the G-Free body, which shifts the centre of gravity of the reel closer to the rod handle, should also help here. Only the brake knob is not so good. Also with this reel there is no possibility to switch off the backstop, you may or may not like that, because I never use this function anyway.

Overview of models

There are many different models from the Sahara with different sizes here the list:

Test

I have bought the 1000` version for brown trout fishing and I am very happy with it. The brake is easy to adjust and runs clean without jerking. Thanks to the light reel it is easy to fish without tiring and precise casts to the trout spots are possible. At the lake I caught a 70` pike while spinning perch, which wanted the little Mepps spinner. But thanks to the strong brake this was no problem and, as I always fish with steel in the murky lake, I could land the fish without fear. So the reel passed the practical test well.

Conclusion

The reel is definitely a good and solid spinning reel, which should please all spinning anglers. You can’t go wrong with this reel. Nevertheless, I would take 10 € more in my hand and buy the much better equipped Nasci, which I have also tested here >>

The Americans do not sell this reel here, although it should be the same model.
